Excursion Freetown historical tour & amputee soccer game tour at Aberdeen
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Jumbled and beautifully chaotic, set amidst ocean and white sand beaches, Freetown is a vibrant port city and the capital of Sierra Leone in West Africa. This colorful city is a bundle of fascinating contradictions, with peaceful beaches adjacent to its gritty streets in this busy major port on the Atlantic Ocean.
Freetown is known also for its history, particularly its role in the slave trade from Africa to the Americas. Freetown was founded as a city in 1792 by Lieutenant John Clarkson and African American ex-slaves, serving as a haven for freed (and freeborn) African Americans and other liberated African and Caribbean settlers. Visit the Sierra Leone National Museum, Railway Museaum, the historic Cotton Tree, and the St. George's Cathedral, built in 1817. Take a stroll through the Big Market before making the transfer to a local hotel for lunch.
Afterwards transfer to a nearby venue to attend the Amputee soccer match, where the Salone Flying Stars amaze spectators with their athleticism. Shuttles will be available to return to the ship.
Note
Please note: A minimal amount of easy walking over short distances, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and the sites visited. Light cotton clothing is recommended, as well as a sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
