Excursion Waitakere wilderness experience tour at Auckland

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Explore the spectacular rainforest and beaches on the west coast of Auckland during this half-day nature excursion.

Auckland, Waitakere Ranges, Arataki Visitor's Centre

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive to the heart of the Waitakere Ranges, a lush, bird-filled fringe of hills separating Auckland from its rugged west coast. Upon arrival, proceed for a visit to the Arataki Visitor's Centre, gateway to the rainforest. Take in breath-taking panoramic views of the entire Auckland isthmus, with the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west, and their two very different harbours; the calm, sparkling Waitemata and brooding Manukau. During your visit, learn about the history of the area and admire the magnificent traditional Maori carvings that stand guard at the entrance.

Rainforest, Bush Walk, Flora and Fauna, Kauri and Giant Fern Trees, Native Birds

Next, your drive continues into the lush rainforest. Upon arrival, take an easy, guided bush walk. Because New Zealand has existed for millions of years separate from the rest of the world, it has evolved its own unique flora and fauna. Seventy percent of its native plants are endemic to New Zealand, and found nowhere else in the world. Your guide explains all about the native species as you walk amongst native kauri and giant tree ferns, and hear the calls of native birds.

Refreshments, Black-Sand Piha Beach

Following your rainforest walk, a refreshment stop is made before driving to the wild, west coast beaches. Visit the unspoilt, black-sand, Piha Beach, a popular surfing hub. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to feel the soft, black sand beneath your feet as you stroll along one of the most awe-inspiring beaches the world has to offer. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
