Excursion Unesco wismar, a baltic beauty & a taste of its medieval beer tour at Warnemünde
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
In the distant past, in the times of Wendish tribes, Wismar’s history began. Situated near the legendary Via Regia, the former East/West trading route of the Wenden, Wismar has been a well-known, often visited and popular trading destination for hundreds of years. Founded in 1229, Wismar was amongst the first cities established in Mecklenburg. A small stream to the east gave the city its name. Even at the very beginning, people from far fell under the spell of the rapidly blossoming city: Merchants, guild-Members, barrel makers, pickler’s, sailors, fishermen, traders and builders were drawn in from many lands and soon created a commercial flowering and a friendly hustle and bustle. In consequence of the thriving trade, pirates too were present. Klaus Stoertebeker, a legend in his own time and a well-known freebooter, lived in Wismar from 1370 to 1386, and is rumoured to have been born here.
Depart Warnemünde and enjoy a guided drive directly to Wismar, where you will arrive after an approximate one hour’s drive.
Once arrived your guide will take you on a leisurely walk during which you will get a glance of this quaint Hanseatic city, which is listed as a UNESCO world Heritage Site. Pass along cobbled streets with Gothic houses, Baroque buildings and Renaissance facades. The Classic Rathaus (Town Hall), the Water Tower, the historic drainage system, merchants’ houses from the Middle Ages, are just some of the fascinating buildings this town has to offer.
You do not know the pleasure of a good beer? In the Hanseatic period, the citizens of Wismar drank “Mumme”, a then widely acclaimed strong dark beer. Hops were cultivated in 148 hops gardens and in the 15th century there were 182 brewers, of whom 12 became city counsellors.
Savour a glass of the Medieval Mumme beer and a traditional German snack within the nostalgic atmosphere of the Brauhaus am Lohberg, a brewery and pub that started in the Middle Ages.
Enjoy some time at leisure within the beautiful town center before returning to the port in Warnemünde.
