Excursion The castles of royal deeside (balmoral & crathes) tour at Aberdeen

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

The northeast of Scotland is renowned for its wealth of castles. Visit two of the finest on a tour through the spectacular scenery of Royal Deeside. Leaving Aberdeen, drive inland to Crathes Castle and Balmoral Castle.

Crathes was home to the Burnett family of Leys for almost four centuries and is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Scotland, with its fairy-tale turrets and fantastic gargoyles. See the Horn of Leys which was given by Robert the Bruce in 1323. Beside the castle is the walled garden which is almost as famous as the castle itself and is home to beautiful borders, ancient yew hedges, a rose garden, a fountain and a glass house.

Rejoin your coach for the journey to Braemar Village and a local hotel for lunch. After lunch board your coach for the short trip to Balmoral Castle.

Balmoral Castle has been a favorite Royal retreat since 1848 and remains the Scottish home of the Royal Family to this day. As it is still used by the Royal family for private visits, Balmoral is only open for a short time each summer. During your visit, see the gardens, exhibitions about the estate, its wildlife and Royal life here. Go inside to visit the Ballroom, the largest and most impressive room in the castle.

Continue back to the North Sea and your awaiting ship.
