Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore the history of maritime communities at the Toba Sea-Folk Museum, experience the ancient tradition of Ama divers while savoring fresh seafood at a traditional Ama hut, and discover the fascinating world of pearl cultivation at Mikimoto Pearl Island.
Toba Sea-Folk Museum
Your tour begins at the pier, where you board a large coach for a 30-minute drive to the Toba Sea-Folk Museum. This museum highlights the region’s rich maritime heritage, presenting traditional fishing techniques, boat craftsmanship, and the cultural traditions of coastal communities. You will spend approximately 45 minutes exploring the exhibits. The terrain is mostly paved with about 10 steps, and restrooms are available.
Ama hut and seafood BBQ
Next, travel to a traditional Ama hut, arriving after a 30-minute transfer. Ama divers—women who have free-dived for shellfish, seaweed, and pearls for centuries—are central to Toba’s cultural identity. During your 85-minute experience, you’ll enjoy a seafood BBQ prepared by Ama women while learning about their lifestyle, sustainable fishing methods, and the deep connection they maintain with the sea. The terrain is nearly flat with only a few steps, and restrooms are available.
Mikimoto Pearl Island
The tour continues with a 40-minute drive to Mikimoto Pearl Island, the birthplace of cultured pearls. Here, you will spend approximately 90 minutes exploring exhibits detailing the pioneering work of Kokichi Mikimoto, the process of pearl cultivation, and the artistry involved in producing high-quality pearls. You can also watch demonstrations and enjoy time to browse pearl shops. Access involves about 30 steps, though an escalator is available, and the paths are mostly paved.
After this immersive cultural and culinary experience, return to the pier on a short drive.
