Excursion Nagasaki peace memorial and historic landmarks tour at Sasebo
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience the profound history and serene beauty of Nagasaki on this reflective half-day journey.
Nagasaki Peace Park
Depart from the pier for approximately 80-minute drive to Nagasaki Peace Park, created to commemorate the city’s destruction on August 9, 1945. As you explore the tranquil grounds, you’ll encounter monuments gifted from nations around the world, each symbolizing peace, hope, and global unity. The park’s focal point is the imposing Peace Memorial Statue, whose raised right arm represents the threat of nuclear weapons, while the outstretched left arm symbolizes eternal peace. The serene set encourages reflection and quiet contemplation.
Atomic Bomb Hypocenter and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb
From here, take a short walk to the Atomic Bomb Hypocenter, the exact location where the atomic bomb detonated directly overhead. A solemn monument marks this historically significant point. Preserved remnants from the blast provide a powerful glimpse into the scale of the devastation and Nagasaki’s extraordinary resilience. Continue by foot to the moving Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, where immersive exhibits trace the events leading up to the bombing, its immediate aftermath, and the city’s remarkable recovery. Displays include photographs, artefacts that survived the explosion, detailed reconstructions, and narratives that advocate for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The tour ends with approximately 85-minute drive back to the ship.
Note
Please Note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking approximately of 0.62 miles (1 km) and several steps, including around 30 steps at Peace Park, several steps at the Hypocenter, and about 70 steps inside the Atomic Bomb Museum. Surfaces are generally flat, with occasional slopes. This excursion is not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility, and accessible vehicles are not available. Elevators or ramps may be available between the Hypocenter and the museum, but stair navigation remains required at multiple points. Photography is permitted outdoors, but flash is not allowed inside the museum. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat closed-toe walking shoes, and sun protection are strongly recommended. Japanese yen is required for any purchases: guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior the cruise. Local Tour Guides tend to have a strong accent therefore we urge flexibility.
