Enjoy the highlights of the island during this half-day sightseeing tour.
Saaremaa is the largest of Estonia's islands - 2,921 square kilometres (1,128 square miles) in area. It is popular as a recreation place for Estonians, with unique nature and numerous historical sights. There are stone fences and old farmhouses with thatched roofs in the villages - very picturesque.
Windmills and Karja Church
Start your tour with a drive to Angla Windmills, to view the five wooden mills typical of the Island. After a short photo stop, continue to Karja Church which dates from the 14th century. It is known for its mysterious decorative elements and delightful wall frescoes.
Kuressaare Walking Tour
After a further drive of approximately 30 minutes, you arrive in Kuressaare - the capital city of the island. Begin your walking tour of Kuressaare's highlights with your guide, including the old part which has preserved its 17th century atmosphere. The notable highlights include the Town Hall, Kuursaal (Beach Saloon) and House of the Nobility.
Bishop's Castle
Next, make a visit to the Bishop's Castle, the most important building in Kuressaare, admiring the architecture of this impressive medieval building and also see the park around the Castle. The Castle was built of chiselled dolomite blocks in the late 14th century and is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the Baltic States.
Free Time
After visiting the Castle, enjoy some free time in the city centre - to perhaps enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the numerous coffee shops (at your own expense), have a stroll or do some shopping in the arts and crafts stores of the city. At the appointed time, return to your coach for the drive back to the pier and your awaiting ship.
Please note: This tour involves extensive walking and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or for those who utilise a wheelchair. This includes approximately 100 metres (330 feet) at Karja Church, one and a half kilometres (one mile) during the walking tour of Kuressaare, one kilometre (half a mile) and steps at the Bishop's Castle and park as well as walking at individual's discretion during your free time. The terrain can be uneven and sloped; comfortable, flat, walking shoes are recommended. As the weather is changeable; (often windy and with short showers) it is advisable to bring a jacket, raincoat or umbrella. It should be noted that refreshments are not included. If purchasing souvenirs, city shops usually accept credit cards and Euro.
