Discover the history, culture and charm of Kochi on-foot during this delightful, half-day walking tour through this historic city.
Kochi, Kochi Castle, Streetcar
Disembark your ship and begin your discovery of Kochi at the Harimayabashi bus terminal, the city’s hub for sightseeing. Your guide will lead you through a selection of landmarks that capture the spirit of this historic destination. Ride Japan’s longest streetcar, the Tosaden, from Harimayabashi to Kochijo-mae Station. A short walk brings you to Kochi Castle, built in the early 1600s and renowned for its authentic architecture, Otemon and Tsumemon Gates, and the honmaru, designated an Important Cultural Property.
Hirome Market, Harimayabashi Bridge
Next, continue to Hirome Market, where colorful stalls and vibrant energy showcase Kochi’s culinary heritage and daily life. The market’s name originates from the ruins of the residence of Shigeaki Hirome, a retainer of the Tosa Domain. He served four generations of feudal lords during the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate and was celebrated as a generous retainer skilled at utilizing the talents of the samurai. Even after the Meiji Restoration, when his mansion disappeared, the area was affectionately called "Hirome Yashiki" by locals, leading to the modern Hirome Market. Afterwards, proceed to the celebrated Harimayabashi Bridge, immortalized in Kochi’s Yosakoi-bushi festival song and a symbol of the city’s folklore.
Kochi Hachimangu Shrine
Reboard the streetcar to Kochibashi Station, then walk to Kochi Hachimangu Shrine. Founded over 700 years ago, it enshrines Ebisu, the god of prosperity, and features a revered bronze horse statue.
After this half-day exploration of Kochi’s culture and history, you will return to your ship with lasting impressions of this vibrant city.
