Excursion Highlights of punta arenas tour at Punta Arenas
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore the highlights of the city at the end of the world, Punta Arenas, rich in incredible history that you can learn about on this fascinating excursion. Delve into the storied past of this city, formerly one of the busiest ports in the world.
First take a short drive from the pier to the beautifully landscaped Municipal Cemetery. See the splendid mausoleums of pioneer families as well as a tomb dedicated to the Unknown Ona, the now extinct Fireland Indians, one of the aboriginal peoples of the Teirra del Fuego.
Continue to the Museo Maggiorino Borgatello, one of the most unusual museums in South America. It was founded by Salesian friars, a religious order that tried to "save" the region by creating missionary refuges. The exhibits here illustrate the habitat and history of Patagonia's aboriginal peoples and the region's natural history. On the way back to the port, make a short stop at the Plaza de Armas Square, where you can see the statue of Magellan and perhaps go shopping for handicrafts and souvenirs.
Your final stop is at the observation point on La Cruz Hill from where, if the weather is clear, you can admire wonderful views of the city, the Straits of Magellan and the Tierra del Fuego. Then continue to the Patagonia Institute, an open-air museum with a collection of farm machinery and a reconstructed dwelling used by early settlers in the 1880s.
Make the return trip to the pier.
