The main town of northern Corsica, Bastia is also the biggest commercial port on the island. Under the Genoese administration, Bastia was the capital of the entire island of Corsica, and became very wealthy thanks to its numerous vineyards, and olive and chestnut tree plantations. Since it was also the nearest port to Italy, Bastia also became an important trading call.

Old Town, St. Nicolas Square, Terra Vecchia, Chapels, Oratorio, Church St. Jean Baptiste

Whilst walking through the narrow streets of the Old Town, discover landmarks of a rich and interesting past. Stroll through St. Nicolas Square, the popular meeting-place of the town's local population, and walk by Terra Vecchia, which stretches from St. Nicolas Square to the Old Port. En route, walk along old, unpaved streets and pass by quaint little chapels and Baroque-styled oratorio, including the Oratoire St. Roch and flamboyant Oratoire de l'Immaculée Conception, before arriving at the Church St. Jean Baptiste, famous for its twin campaniles.

Terra Nova, Citadel, Du Donjon Square, Palais des Gouverneur Museum, Jardin Romieu

Next, stroll through the Terra Nova, which includes the Citadel, Du Donjon Square and impressive, 14th-century Palais des Gouverneur. Today, the Palais des Gouverneur serves as a museum. A visit is made to the museum, which is divided into three main sections; 'Bastia's Urban Development', 'History of Bastia, Genoese Capital, and Political, Social and Economic Centre, and 'Bastia Cultural Centre'. Leaving the museum, your last stop is at the must-see Jardin Romieu, an 18th-century terraced garden that ascends the cliff. At the conclusion of your visit, commence the short walk or open-top mini train ride back to the pier.
