Detailed Itinerary:
Chan May, Hue City
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Hue, the ‘Imperial City’ of 13 Nguyen Emperors who rose to glory during their reign (1802-1945) and were the last ruling family of Vietnam. Hue is a repository of the fascinating ancient treasures of the city, including the Imperial Citadel, Kings' Tomb, temples, and pagodas. Your first stop is at the Royal Citadel, built by Emperor Gia Long in 1804 and since restored to its original grandeur.
Royal Citadel, Imperial Enclosure, Noon Gate, Palace of Supreme Harmony, Esplanade
Highlights of your guided walking tour of the Royal Citadel include the Ngo Mon (Noon Gate), where kings once announced the yearly calendar and names of new doctors of philosophy. Afterward, visit the Palace of Supreme Harmony and adjoining Esplanade of Great Salutation. They were equally important in imperial life, hosting coronations, emperors' birthday parties, and court proceedings. Before you leave, stop by the Royal Citadel with its the Imperial Enclosure. The Royal Citadel's comparison to China's Forbidden City is apparent whilst marvelling at this intriguing ‘citadel within a citadel’.
Thien Mu Pagoda, Garden House, Guided Stroll, Lotus Tea, Colonial Building, Vietnamese Lunch
Next, re-board your coach and transfer to the nearby Thien Mu Pagoda. Founded in 1601, Thien Mu is the symbol of the city and one of the holiest pagodas in all of Vietnam. With its days as a hotbed for anti-government protests long gone, the Thien Mu Pagoda today is a serene place where novice gardeners tend bonsai and monks deliver incantations. Leaving this iconic pagoda, a visit is made to a nha vuon (garden house). These traditional houses are privately owned, and set amidst attractive formal gardens. Upon arrival, enjoy a delightful stroll and a cup of lotus tea, then proceed for a Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant in an old colonial building.
An Dinh Palace, Local Cake-Maker’s Home, Pine Valley, Emperor's Tomb
After lunch, visit the An Dinh Palace, which lies on the bank of the An Cuu Canal in Hue City. This palace is where the Khai Dinh Emperor lived from a child until becoming the 12th Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty as a private residence. Following a stop at a local house where all kinds of Hue local cakes (Loc, Nam, Bao, etc.) are made, a final visit is made at the Tu Duc Tomb (Emperor’s Tomb). Located in an immense pine valley approximately five miles (about eight kilometres) from Hue City, the Emperor’s Tomb is one of the most beautiful examples of royal architecture of the Nguyen Dynasty. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.
