Excursion Maputo city and fundação fernando leite couto tour at Maputo
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Formerly known as Lourenco Marques, named after a Portuguese explorer who landed here in 1544, Maputo is the capital of Mozambique. Most of Maputo's infrastructure (and architecture) was destroyed during the nearly thirty years of war that began with the Portuguese independence movement in 1962 and continued after independence in 1975. A peace treaty was signed in 1992 officially bringing the war to an end. Today the city is slowly recreating some of its former glory.
Depart the quayside and make your way to the Museum of Natural History, where there is the opportunity to walk around a museum famous for housing the most complete elephant fetus in the world, amongst a host of other interesting artifacts. Continue to the color-filled Feima market, where guests can enjoy some souvenir shopping and live entertainment.
Your next stop is Fundação Fernando Leite Couto cultural center, where there is a rare chance to explore the library and gallery. The gallery is filled with works of many famous Mozambican artists and photographers. Return to the quayside after your visit of this enchanting city.
Please note: There is a moderate amount of walking and many uneven, unpaved surfaces as well as stairs, making this tour not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or in wheelchairs. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable shoes for walking.
