Excursion Castle town & temple landscape of hagi tour at Yamaguchi

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Begin your exploration in Hagi Castle Town, one of Japan’s best-preserved samurai districts. Stroll through atmospheric streets lined with white-walled samurai residences, earthen walls, and narrow lanes that have remained remarkably unchanged for centuries. As you walk with your guide, gain insight into the daily lives and social structure of the samurai who once lived here. Visit the Kikuya Residence, the elegant home of a prosperous merchant family entrusted with financial duties for the local lord. Its beautifully preserved rooms, gardens, and artifacts offer a fascinating contrast to the samurai dwellings surrounding it.

Continue to Toko-ji Temple, founded in 1691 and associated with the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism. Set within tranquil forest surroundings, the temple’s wooden buildings and serene atmosphere invite quiet reflection. Just beyond the main halls lies the impressive graveyard of the Mori clan, the powerful feudal lords who governed Hagi throughout the Edo period. Rows of stone lanterns and dignified tombs create a solemn and historically rich setting.

This visit reveals the timeless elegance of Hagi’s samurai culture and the spiritual depth of its Zen heritage, offering an intimate window into Japan’s feudal past.
