Excursion Valhalla macadamia nut farm tour at Puerto Quetzal

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Learn about self-sustainable agriculture with a visit to the forward-thinking Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm on today's educational excursion.

Once aboard your coach (90-minute drive), pass through the lowlands, where the first tribes of the land built their first settlements. The indigenous people of this land used to live, hunting and cultivating their food in the rich and fertile volcanic lands. Drive past the many fields today cultivated with sugar cane.

The road climbs 5,000 feet (1.5km) above sea level, featuring changing scenery several times due to the changes in ecosystems and microclimates, formed by the union of different tectonic plates.

After the bus ride, arrive at Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm. This farm is a commercial, ecological and social project that seeks to educate local indigenous families to develop self-sustainable agriculture. This farm also works to educate people about the dangers of Global Warming, while helping to reverse it. This project won the prestigious Golden Fete D'Excellence Award in 2002.

Making the return drive back (90 minutes), see four volcanoes, Agua, Fuego, Acatenango and Pacaya, the last three in constant activity. Return to the pier.
