Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover two of the most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Barcelona during this captivating, half-day sightseeing excursion.
Barcelona, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, Modernist Gothic Church
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Sagrada Familia, the masterpiece of legendary architect Antonio Gaudì. Sagrada Familia is an iconic symbol of the Barcelona City skyline, a popular landmark for visitors from all over the world and often considered to be among the most extraordinary monuments ever constructed. This magnificent, neo-Gothic church was designed using the great medieval cathedrals as models of reference, and constructed in the Modernist style (the Catalan version of Art Nouveau).
Nativity, Passion, and Glory Facades
Promoted by and for the people, this unique project, and its realisation, was entrusted to Gaudì. Although just over 30 years of age at the time, he worked on Sagrada Familia for the rest of his life. Today, 140 years after laying the first cornerstone, work continues to this day and follows the plans laid down by its designer. Along the way, five generations have witnessed the temple's ongoing progress. During your exterior photo stop, look for the three grand façades; the Nativity, which faces east, the Passion, which faces west, and the Glory, which faces south and has yet to be completed. Leaving Sagrada Familia, re-board your coach and head to Sant Pau, the world's largest Art Nouveau site.
Sant Pau, Guided Tour, Art Nouveau Complex, Local Café, Refreshment Stop, Passeig de Gracia
Sant Pau is Lluís Domènech i Montaner's most important work, and the outcome of one of the most significant restoration projects in recent years. The union of history and architecture harkens back to the early years of the 20th century, a time when Barcelona was undergoing its greatest phase of urban growth. Your guided tour inside Sant Pau explores the evolution of one of the oldest medical institutions in Europe, and shows how this extraordinary Art Nouveau complex was designed and built. After a brief stop at Sant Pau's gift shoppe, proceed for a refreshment stop at a local café. Your tour concludes with an approximately 35-minute drive back to the pier, passing by the Passeig de Gracia en route.
