Excursion Tongass botanicals nature walk tour at Wrangell

A miniature getaway within our coastal temperate rainforest awaits you! After a short shuttle ride though Wrangell’s historic downtown you’ll stroll on a gravel path through native ferns and berries as your guide explains the interconnectedness of the muskeg, alpine, and deep forest ecology of Southeast Alaska. Learn the names and traditional uses of local flora from microscopic mosses to the towering trees essential for survival of people on this land for thousands of years. Discover the medicinal properties of lichens, how to harvest herring eggs with hemlock branches, and much more. You will be sure to leave this walk with a wealth of local knowledge and an enjoyable experience among the lush, quiet, and peaceful surroundings of the mighty Tongass Rainforest. The tour departs from and returns to your ship's pier via shuttle bus. Total walking distance of 1.25 miles (2 km) on packed gravel path with several small inclines.

This is primarily a walking tour. The trail rating of this tour is moderate. You will be walking 1.25 miles on cement and a fine gravel path. Please wear comfortable walking shoes & wear weather appropriate attire. Guests walk through Wrangell's Historic Sites on the way to the Nature Trailhead. This site is handicap accessible, although we are not able to accommodate wheel chairs. Restrooms are available near the entrance of the Nature Trail.
