Excursion Swallowtail lighthouse hike tour at Saint John
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Join the members of the Swallowtail Keepers Society to discover the restoration efforts and the "Keepers in Residence" initiatives at this historic Grand Manan lighthouse. First illuminated in 1860 using porpoise oil, Swallowtail has served as a beacon for fishermen and sailors for many generations and continues to function today. Its original wooden tower—one of the last remaining in Canada—and its stunning coastal vistas make it one of New Brunswick’s most photographed sites.
Visit the lighthouse museum, ascend to the lantern room, and stroll along the path connecting the keeper’s house and the tower, retracing the steps of the island’s early lightkeepers.
Note
Please note: A moderate to strenuous amount of walking and standing for approximately 3km (2 miles). At times over crushed-rock tail and gravel path with some inclines. To access the lighthouse, guests need to cross a wooden bridge and navigate 54x narrow wooden steps. Local infrastructure is basic and coaches, guides, equipment, and services are the best available in the island but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. Dress warmly in layers, with sturdy, closed-toe, waterproof shoes/boots, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves.
