Excursion Sights in the atacama desert with pachamama ceremony tour at Antofagasta

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Take a full-day excursion into Atacama, the world's most arid desert. Atacama is a unique destination, where in several areas not a single drop of rain has been recorded since records began. It is an area that combines amazing scenery, eerie lunar landscapes, and an impressive array of archaeological and geological points of interest.

From Antofagasta head inland (four-hour drive) to San Pedro Village and the many attractions that lie in the Atacama Desert region. Upon arrival in San Pedro de Atacama village, visit the quaint handcrafts market selling typical products from the region. There will be a half hour or so of free time to explore the delightful adobe church and Caracoles, typical of the narrow, picturesque streets of the village with its adobe architecture. A delicious quick lunch is then served in this charming adobe village.

Continue towards the immense Atacama Salt Flat, one of Chile's major highlights. Splendid geologic formations, interesting fauna (including its most famous residents, the pink flamingos) and major archaeological sites are among its numerous attractions. Visibility is excellent thanks to the exceptionally dry air, allowing visitors to see over 50 miles to the other side of the salt flat with the naked eye.

The final visit is made at Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), with its incredible rock formations and unique lunar landscape, providing an amazing geological spectacle. It is particularly special at sunset when it becomes a kaleidoscope of reds, yellows, and orange. There are numerous, eerie rock formations that jut out of the sand, caused by wind erosion over time.

A few miles away is a look-out point over the majestic valley, where there is an opportunity to participate as part the indigenous ritual of gratefulness to the Mother Earth (Pachamama). Drive 4 hours back to the port of Antofagasta to re-join the ship.
