Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1-hour drive to the cultural heart of Ilocos Norte, and a visit to the Sarrat Church. During your guided tour, learn about the history and timeless charm of this wonderful old church, which was erected in 1779 and formerly known as the San Miguel Church. Afterward, re-board your coach and head to the quaint community of Bacsil, where an authentic and immersive experience awaits. Upon arrival, experience a unique opportunity to observe the traditional art of making Basi, a local sugarcane wine deeply-rooted in Ilocano heritage. Marvel at this age-old process, which is meticulously demonstrated by skilled artisans.
Dadapilan Machine, Sugarcane-Pressing Demonstration & History
A focal point of your guided visit is the fascinating Dadapilan, a machine synonymous with the rich agricultural history of the region. Comprising two substantial trunks of logs, the Dadapilan harkens back to a bygone era when carabaos (water buffaloes) powered the circular movement that pressed sugarcane between the trunks. This process, known as Pinagdapil, is not only a testament to Ilocano tradition but also an integral part of the cultural fabric, resonating through generations. Whilst observing the extraction of sugarcane juice using the Dadapilan, learn about the intricate artistry and historical significance of this method, one of the most important vestiges in the history of sugarcane cultivation.
Sugarcane Products, Traditional Processes, Basi Wine Tasting & Snack
The sugarcane harvest in Bacsil goes beyond Basi, yielding a range of products like sukang-iloko (vinegar), moskovado, and more. Each product carries its own unique process, showcasing the deep connection between the people of Ilocos and the bounty of sugarcane. Immerse yourself in the stories woven into each step of the traditional process, and garner a profound appreciation for the Ilocano cultural heritage, roots, and traditions preserved in the charming community of Bacsil. Following your tour, proceed for a tasting of Basi accompanied by a local snack. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven, cobblestone, and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, an umbrella, bottled water, and local currency or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Please dress conservatively when going ashore. As a rule, women should never wear anything remotely revealing (miniskirts, shorts, capris, beachwear, and sleeveless or low-cut tops), and men should always wear shirts and trousers in public. Proper attire is required to enter religious sites; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Shoes must be removed prior to entering the temples; we suggest bringing along a pair of thick socks, because the pavement may be very hot. Guests must be at least 5 years old to participate on this tour; minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Infrastructure in Salomague may be basic, and local conditions may be challenging; coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other ports. Therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique, less touristic destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in this area is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring regions, as vehicles and guides are brought in from the whole region. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. For your added safety and protection, please leave jewellery, valuables, and large amounts of cash on board the ship. Guests should be respectful towards local sentiments and customs. The driving time between the pier and sites visited is approximately 1 hours in each direction. The tour sequence may vary.
