Overview

Hike the restricted Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on this full-day tour with a National Park Service-trained guide, with lunch included. The route also visits Bay View Coffee Farm and the Captain Cook Monument viewpoint, St. Benedict's Painted Church, Punaluu Black-Sand Beach for honu (green sea turtle) spotting, and the Punaluu Bake Shop for Hawaiian sweetbreads.

Highlights

• Guided trek across the 116,000-acre (46,943-hectare) Kahuku Unit, past cinder cones, lava tree molds, and the Lava Flow of 1868.

• Climb atop the Puu o Lokuana cinder cone, a historic cinder quarry with wide views over the Kau district.

• Stop at Punaluu Black-Sand Beach to look for honu (green Hawaiian sea turtles) basking on the sand or feeding offshore.

Important Details

• This tour involves extensive walking and standing for about one mile (1.6 kilometers) over uneven, cobblestone, sandy, and natural surfaces and inclines, with steps at the coach and 5-10 at each site; not suitable for guests prone to motion sickness, limited mobility, or wheelchair users.

• Driving time between the pier and Kahuku is approximately two hours each way; operation is subject to weather.

• Minimum age is 5 years old; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18; a signed waiver is required.
