Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover Naxos's Archaic Period, or Golden Age, with a history that dates to the dawn of time, on this half day (four hours) guided tour of important archeological sites.

Embark from the pier and board your coach for the 30-minute drive to inland Naxos. Arrive at Melanes to explore the most characteristic remains of the Archaic period, which constitutes "the golden era" of Naxos. Stop first at the unfinished colossal statue of a Kouros, also known as Apollo, that has been "sleeping" in a garden for centuries. Listen as your guide shares local insights about the dramatic story of the statue's discovery in a farmer's garden, and the technical details of this amazing example of early Greek sculpture.

Next, take the 30-minute drive to Sangri village, and visit the Temple of Demeter and its small museum. On site, hear about the myths related to the goddess of agriculture and fertility of the land, as well as the ancient celebrations related to the circle of life. Notice the architectural details of the temple that laid the foundation for the amazing architectural achievement of the ancient world, the famous Parthenon of Athens.

Reboard your coach for the drive back to Naxos town where the port is situated. Learn from your guide about the local history and the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo, also known also as the "Portara" or Great Door, which can be seen from the port.

Walk around the town on your own and explore Apollo's site, the prominent landmark of Naxos, before returning to your coach for the drive back to the pier.
