Excursion Leeds castle tour at Dover
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Take a short journey from Dover through the heartland of the county of Kent, known to many as the "Garden of England," bringing you to the historic and picturesque estate of Leeds Castle. Situated on a raised island in the middle of a lake, Leeds Castle is the oldest and most romantic castle in England, set in 500 acres of beautiful grounds and parkland.
A castle has been on these grounds as early as 1086 and was initially built upon in 857 by a Saxon Chief.
It was rebuilt by the Normans in 1119 and was then a royal palace for over three centuries. Leeds Castle was reportedly a favorite residence in the 13th century for King Edward I, and in the 16th century, Henry VIII used it as a home for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Its most famous owner Henry VIII was responsible for turning Leeds into a truly royal palace and creating its magnificent apartments.
Enjoy free time in the castle with a personal audio-guide and explore the beautiful grounds at your leisure. Re-board your coach for the return journey to Dover.
Please note: There are ramps that make the castle accessible, but it is requested that guests requiring assistance are requested to attend with a companion to assist as the guide will be unable to take responsibility for their needs during the tour. Waterproof outerwear and comfortable footwear are recommended.
