Excursion Inverie & knoydart penisular cruise tour at Portree

Rich in history, folklore, wilderness and wildlife, Inverie is the largest settlement on mainland Britain which is not connected to the road network. This remote region can only be accessed by a long and very rough walk, or by boat (or helicopter in rare instances). Boat travel is the most common means of transport to and from Inverie.

Inverie lies on the north side of Loch Nevis on the Knoydart Peninsula. Your first sight of it is as a tiny line of whitewashed buildings strung out along the shore of Inverie Bay; almost insignificant under the towering bulk of Sgurr Coire Choinnichean. While at 769m this is not a high mountain by Knoydart standards, it still provides a scenic and impressive backdrop to your journey.

Board the coach in Portree and travel 75 minutes south past the majestic Cuillin Mountains and onwards to Armadale where your adventure continues. In Armadale board your boat, the MV Western Isles, a beautiful and newly refurbished vessel. The MV Western Isles has been serving this peninsula since 1950 as a lifeline local ferry and is now one of the West Coast's major tourist attractions. Your cruise to Inverie takes approximately 90 minutes and takes you past Green Island where seals bask year-round. Keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife both in and out of the water.

As you travel aboard, enjoy an individually prepared lunch in a charming picnic basket, accompanied by a glass of Prosecco, or soft drink if you prefer.

Once in Inverie, a true Highland welcome awaits you as you arrive ashore. Enjoy an optional guided walk and learn about the local history of this area. You can also enjoy a tipple in the UK mainland's most remote pub, The Old Forge, or shop for souvenirs in the Knoydart Foundation Community Enterprise Shop.

After you time ashore, re-board the MV Western Isles for your journey back to Armadale. Enjoy a nice tipple of local whiskey or gin with picturesque views of Loch Nevis and the islands of Eigg, Rum and Skye. Once back on dry land your motor coach transfers you 75 minutes back to Portree and your awaiting ship.

Please note: This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility; the boat is not wheelchair accessible and the excursion requires the physical ability to handle oneself aboard the boat in occasionally choppy waters. Because this tour is on the open water it can get cold, so warm, waterproof clothing recommended as well as flat shoes with a nonslip sole.
