Situated about one-and-a-half hours from Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis boasts a picturesque location and a rich history. Its name is derived from Emperor Pedro II, the country's second monarch. In fact, Petrópolis served as the summer residence of Brazil's aristocrats during the 19th century and, between 1894 and 1903, was the capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Crystal Palace
Depart the pier in your air-conditioned coach for the scenic drive to Petropolis. Upon arrival, visit the Crystal Palace, an extraordinary work of architecture constructed entirely of metal and glass manufactured in France. The luminous structure was opened in 1884 and became a favorite venue for ballroom dances in the 19th century.
Imperial Museum
After admiring the stunning building, continue to the Imperial Museum, considered one of the most important museums in Brazil. The museum was once the imperial summer residence and today affords a peek into the opulent lifestyle of the monarchs. Marvel at gorgeous materials such as its white Carrara and black Belgian marbles, the dining hall's mahogany furniture and the jacaranda wood of the music room. Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcântara
After lunch a visit is made at the Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcântara for a visit. The Cathedral, one of the city's top attractions, is also one of the most famous churches in Brazil. Built in French neo-gothic style, with a beautiful rose window, the cathedral is listed as a national historic heritage by IPHAN.
