Get a taste of Dakar’s rich culture and history on this half-day city tour. Begin with a scenic drive through Dakar, taking in the city’s major highlights before proceeding to Kermel Market—one of the liveliest and most colorful markets in the city. This picturesque marketplace is rich with vibrant colors, enticing scents, and traditional Senegalese handicrafts.
From here, continue to the African Renaissance Monument, a striking 49-meter bronze statue overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Learn about its significance as a symbol of African unity and progress while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of Dakar.
Your tour continues with a visit to the Léopold Sédar Senghor Museum, the former residence of Senegal’s first president, renowned poet, and co-founder of the Negritude movement. This beautifully preserved home offers an intimate insight into Senghor’s life, his artistic and intellectual legacy, and his lasting influence on Senegalese culture.
Next, proceed to the Museum of Black Civilizations, considered the second most important museum in Africa after Cairo’s main archaeological museum. Be welcomed by the museum curator and enjoy an enriching guided visit through exhibitions celebrating the global contributions of Black civilizations. Return to port after this immersive journey.
Note
Please note: This tour is available to in-transit guests continuing on to the following cruise. Senegal is a low-income country with very basic infrastructure, and vastly different to the western culture mentality. Local conditions may be challenging; therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. Coaches, guides, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. This excursion involves a moderate amount of walking at times over uneven, bumpy and unpaved surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at both museums, making this excursion unsuitable for guests with walking difficulties. Photography at Kermel market is forbidden, please listen carefully to your guide’s instructions and respect local customs and regulations during your visit. Order of sites visited may vary from description. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection is recommended. Anticipate high temperatures and humidity and we recommend staying hydrated by bringing your water bottle. Guests are informed that tips to local guides and drivers are at the guest’s discretion.
