Some twenty minutes’ drive down Basse-Terre’s western coast by coach is Vieux Fort lighthouse, where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic, and your guide shares a brief historical recap. Next on the agenda: a stop at iconic Grande Anse beach – decked out for your photographing pleasure in black sand, rolling surf, and towering coconut palms.

Think of it as an hour-long survey course in French gastronomic classics, reimagined with beaucoups of local Creole flair. And ingredients seldom seen on the Continent.

Among the typical offerings: tropical punches and syrups, local foie gras flavored with rum, toasts of magret (duck) breast marinated in island spices, smoked fresh-caught fish, nectar-like white and vintage rums. Top all that off with mouthwatering coconut candies, sinfully good chocolate, and aromatic local-roasted coffee – and you’ve got one very delightful assemblage, indeed.

During the half-hour drive back to the pier, you might want to close your eyes and recall your favorite flavours. But only for a moment; the scenery’s too good.
