Excursion Countryside and wilderness centre tour at Seydisfjordur

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Embrace the scenic natural splendour, history, and unique flavours of Iceland during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Seyðisfjörður, Countryside, Mountains, Fjords, Farmland, Fljótsdalsherad, Lagarfljót, Hengifoss

Depart the pier for a scenic, approximately 65-minute drive north along the coast, travelling through Seyðisfjörður and into the beautiful countryside. Along the way, pass by breath-taking mountains sweeping down to the sea, long, narrow fjords, and fertile farmland. Continue past Fljótsdalsherad and Lagarfljót, Iceland's third-largest lake, with splendid views of Hengifoss, Iceland’s second-highest waterfall at approximately 419 feet (about 127 metres). Upon reaching the other side of the lake, a visit is made to the Wilderness Centre.

Wilderness Centre, Northern European Highlands, Guided Tour, Meet Locals, Music, Singing

Upon arrival at the Wilderness Centre, step across the old wooden bridge and then take a step back in time. The Wilderness Centre is located where the road ends, with the greatest highlands of northern Europe as a backdrop. Experience tranquillity and authenticity at this unique venue. The mission of the Wilderness Exhibitions is to make guests feel moved, surprised, and enlightened by the experience, and not like they were in a museum. During your visit, you are escorted by spirited locals who share stories and show how adventurous life was in-and-about the highlands. Get an up-close look at how people used to live, and blend in with the locals whilst they sing and play the old foot-pedal organ in the ‘baðstofa’.

Old Turf Smokehouse, Farmhouse & Kitchen, Rhubarb Wine Tasting, Lunch, Icelandic Specialities

The authentic local food experience at the Wilderness Centre begins outside, near the old turf smoke house. Enter the old-style kitchen in the old Farmhouse. Whilst they are preparing your meal, converse with the locals about the food, and learn how it was traditionally treated and preserved in the days of old. You are also invited to join in a tasting of delightful rhubarb wine before enjoying a delicious lunch of Icelandic specialities. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier, with a comfort stop en route.
