Excursion A walk in rosendal tour at Rosendal
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
While the natural grandeur of Rosendal’s setting along the Hardangerfjord is majestic, a lesser-known surprise about this charming little village is how deep its cultural roots run. On this easy guided town walk, you’ll visit two key landmarks that tell much of that story.
The Baroniet Rosendal
Setting out from the pier on foot, you’ll soon reach the Barony of Rosendal – and find yourself hurled back to the 1660s. That’s when a fabulously wealthy Norwegian bride received this land upon her wedding – and built the Renaissance-style manor house you see here with her new husband. By 1678, the King had granted their home the vaulted status of a Barony.
A guided inside tour reveals state apartment décor spanning multiple historic epochs, reflecting the changing tastes of successive owners over time. The library is the only 17th-century room in Norway remaining as it was built, complete with original rich French tapestries. Outside, magnificent Victorian gardens beckon – including an intricate Renaissance rose planting and authentic kitchen garden. Take some free time to wander here and experience over 300 years of horticultural history.
Kvinnherad Church
A short walk from the Barony brings you to quietly austere Kvinnherad Church, an even older landmark. Dating from the 13th century, its crisp white Gothic exterior features fine soapstone doorway and window details, while the interior is a more Baroque affair. For 300 years, this church belonged to the Barony, with generations of barons and family members buried in its vaults. The pier is fifteen minutes – and several centuries – from here. Enjoy the stroll back.
