Excursion Normandy landing beaches & sainte mère l’eglise tour at Cherbourg
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
You will drive with your local guide along the coast to Colleville-sur-Mer, site of the American Cemetery, high on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach. Nearly 9,400 servicemen and women are buried in this serene and pristine place. Continue down to Omaha Beach, scene of some of the highest casualties during the landings, and a site of the utmost importance during the landing. Then proceed to the Pointe du Hoc. Taken by storm on the morning of the 6th of June 1944 by the men of the American 2nd Ranger Battalion, it was also one of the strong points of the German fortifications. The site is a perfect example of what a German battery was like, with its rangefinding post, its casemates, its shelters...
After a quaint lunch in the beautiful Chateau La Chenevière (or equivalent), proceed to the village of Sainte Mère Eglise. Atop the modest church in this village US paratrooper Private John Steele snagged his parachute on the spire. He played dead on the roof, hoping that German troops would not spot him… After a guided visit of the village, you will reach Utah Beach for a stop, before returning to your ship in Cherbourg.
