Take a tour of Algiers and visit the imposing Martyrs Monument, the most dominant landmark with views of the Casbah and the Bay of Algiers. This is probably the first thing you see as you are sailing into the port of Algiers.

You then proceed to visit the Historic El Djazaïr Hotel, formerly the St. George which is considered to be the jewel of national cultural heritage. Edith Piaf and Simone de Beauvoir were some of the renowned guests. During WW2, General Eisenhower, Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces, made the Hotel his general headquarters, where he resided for 16 months. After some light refreshments you will have the opportunity to browse the stalls of local artisans.

You will drive through the city center to view La Grande Poste, built by the French in 1920. Massive turrets, keyhole doors, and elegant neo-Moorish fittings which makes it one of the city's most whimsical modern buildings. From here, you will continue along the Parisian-style boulevards of the city's seafront whilst your guide will explain points of interest along the way to visit the imposing Basilica of Notre Dame D' Afrique (Our Lady of Africa), which lies on a promontory commanding panoramic views and pointing towards Rome, the capital of Christendom. On entering the church, you are at once struck by the numerous marble tablets that cover the walls. These are tokens of gratitude of those whose prayers had been answered. There are also several evocative inscriptions. Have a moment of reflection before visiting the tiny shop selling postcards, religious artifacts, and sacred music. You may also wish to purchase a candle and light it in reverence to this sacred location or as a personal votive.
