Excursion Caen: city of william the conqueror tour at Caen

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Departure from pier and drive to Caen city center.

Located between land and sea, CAEN, the capital of Lower Normandy, is a vibrant, buzzing city blending a rare wealth of heritage and culture.

Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century, Caen has preserved the splendour and radiance of dural times. The castle, Abbeys, as well as private town houses, universities and other academies all attest of the development of the city through the centuries, even after the terrible bombings of 1944.

Enjoy a walking visit of the historical town. Discover the Ducal Castle, considered as one of the largest fortified enclosures in Europe. Your guide leads you through the stronghold built by William the Conqueror. Then walk to St Peters Square: admire the old church skirted by beautiful private mansions of the 16th century: the halftimbered facade of the Quatrans House, the Renaissance courtyard of Escoville Manor... Through St Peters Street reach the Men's Abbey, built in 1063 by William the Conqueror. Pass by the romantic ruins of Saint Etienne le vieux. Then explore Saint-Etienne Abbey Church, a gem of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles which houses the tomb of its founder William.

Drive back to pier.
