Excursion A walk in the casbah tour at Algiers
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
You board your coach and as you drive through the city center your guide will point out the major landmarks and give you an insight into the history and culture of Algeria. Your coach will stop you near the King's Palace in the higher Casbah and from here you walk a short distance to a typical Casbah house where you will be invited by the lady of the house to enter and visit her home and then enjoy a glass of mint tea and typical local biscuits whilst taking time to absorb the atmosphere from the terrace.
You then walk down the steps to the lower part of the Casbah. There is absolutely no hurry so you will have ample time to take some great photographs of the play of light in this maze of narrow passages, the protruding balconies held up by a series of wooden poles, the tiny workshops tucked away in the alleys producing a variety of things such as wooden furniture, brass items or shoes and the lively children playing with anything they get their hands on.
You then proceed down to Martyrs' Square where you can see three Mosques including the recently restored Ketchaoua Mosque, once a Church. Your coach will be waiting here for the short return trip to the port and ship.

Note
Please note: Tour is led by a Police Escort. Taking photos of military & police buildings is forbidden. Infrastructure in Algiers may be basic, and local conditions may be challenging: coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other ports therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique less touristic destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in this area is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring regions as vehicles and guides are brought in from the whole region. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours and we thank you for your understanding.
