Excursion Old city carriage ride tour at Alexandria
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore the long and rich legacy of Alexandria during this scenic, 3.5 hour excursion and carriage-ride along the Cornish of the old part of Alexandria city.
Depart the pier for the approximate 15-minute drive to the Citadel of Quait Bay.
The Citadel of Quait Bay
The island of Pharos was a major port having two huge harbours. The Fort was built in the 1480's by Sultan Qaitbey on the site of Alexandria ancient lighthouse. The entrance is through a gateway made of red Aswan granite. Inside a cistern was used to store water in case of a siege. Also located inside the fort is the Naval Museum which contains artefacts from the Roman and Napoleonic sea battles.
After the Citadel visit, embark your horse carriage for a 45-minutes ride along the coast of the Mediterranean toward the city centre. On the way, pass by the Abu El Abbas mosque and the Unknown Soldier.
At the city centre of Alexandria, free time is made to walk around the old part of the city and shop. Guests with limited mobility may chose to stay within the city at a local coffee shop overlooking the Mediterranean sea during free time. Following shopping time, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 250 metres (273 yards) with some stairs to negotiate inside the Citadel, plus walking at guests discretion during free time, and is not suitable for guests who are wheelchair bound. For guests with limited mobility, foldable wheelchair and walkers can be accommodated and guests may opt to stay near the city. We recommend guests wear light comfortable clothing and walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and water from the ship. Each horse carriage can accommodate 2 guests each and lasts 45-minutes.
