Excursion La boquilla fishing village & drumming show tour at Cartagena

See an impressive fortress and immerse yourself in the traditional way of life at the La Boquilla fishing village on this delightful half-day tour. Departing the pier by motor coach, travel 30 minutes to enjoy views of San Felipe Fortress, a military stronghold situated outside the walled city.

The imposing structure of the San Felipe Fortress is considered to be the most outstanding feats of Spanish military engineering in the New World. Construction on the fort began in 1536 and continued for 121 years.

View the immensity of the fort and take a few photographs before heading to the fishing village of La Boquilla, located 30 minutes east of Cartagena in an area of mangroves. On arrival, you are welcomed by the villagers with an engaging dance performance and a refreshment of coconut milk.

Then board an open canoe and allow a local fisherman to paddle you along the waterways, introducing you to the shallow waters and navigating through the tunnels naturally created by the mangrove trees. Keep an eye out for abundant wildlife, including birds such as kingfishers, white heron and pelicans. Observe a demonstration of traditional fishing methods using handmade nets with weights.

Arriving back at the village, enjoy a presentation of traditional drumming performed by the younger members of the local community. The drums or "tamboras" are an integral part of Afro Colombian culture and in recent years, the young men of the community have been encouraged to take up drumming as an alternative to getting involved in gangs and related criminal activity. Play your own personal drum, and expect to be exuberantly encouraged and instructed on how to beat the drum to become a part of the show in this interactive and very joyful experience.

At the conclusion of your tour, say your farewells and thanks and re-board the motor coach for the return journey to the port.
