Excursion Heritage churches at chiloe island tour at Castro

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Take a tour of Chiloé Island and learn of the distinctive history, architecture and heritage of this charming place, particularly its many churches. Leave the pier to drive to Nercon church, finally open after years of restoration - admire its lovingly renovated woodwork and take some pictures.

Continue towards Chonchi, the "three-story town" with its uniquely constructed houses arranged on steps on the hillside. The town was founded as a Jesuit missionary residence in 1754 and the construction of the town's distinctive church was started at the same time. Visit the church and walk downhill along the rows of colorful wooden houses to tour the small but interesting Museum of Traditions and take a short walk before driving back to Castro.

Continue to see Gamboa Bridge located over the Gamboa River to see the "palafitos", the quintessential colorful wooden houses built on stilts above the water for which the island is known.

Back in the main town, visit the brilliantly colored San Francisco church, built in 1906, with its cathedral-like arched interior made out of wood and stained glass. Enjoy some time at leisure at the main Plaza. Guests that want to stay longer, perhaps making a stop at the interesting and vibrant handicraft market of Castro, may return independently to the pier.
